Golden Dung Fly

Description

This must be one of the most underrated insects around: the dung fly (Scathophaga stercoraria). They actually don't feed on dung, but on nectar and on smaller insects. The dung (mostly of horses and cows) is where they hunt and where the females lay their eggs. When you look at them closely their golden colors and furry appearance can become seemly pretty. This one was killed by a fungus, still attached to the leaf of a berry bush.

UPDATE: Wow! My first Daily Deviation, something I had been looking forward to quite a long time! It's a great feeling to see how this work of mine is so appreciated by all of you.
I want to express my sincere gratitude to *meihua and `hellfirediva for suggesting and featuring my work.

UPDATE: I'm pleased to announce that this work was selected for the Photokina Fine Art Gallery. The photo will be exhibited as a fine art print at the Fine Art Area of the Photokina photography fair in Cologne on September 20th (Hall 2.2, Stand B40).
